Why am I Still Seeing Ads if I Bought the Pro/Premium App, or an Upgrade to Remove Ads In the Free App?

Dictionary.com has two sets of apps, a separate free and paid app,  iOS and Android

Android apps:

  • Our Free Android app, Dictionary.com: Find Definitions for English Words
    • This app is free to download from the Play Store.
    • It comes with our in-house Dictionary and Thesaurus offerings, games & Editorial content, does contain ads.
    • It also has optional in-app purchases (for more content, to remove ads, offline dictionary, and a "power pack" bundle where you can buy all the separate in-app purchases at one price).
  • Our Premium Android app, Dictionary.com Premium
    •  This is a paid app in the Play Store.
    • It is ad-free, includes both our in-house Dictionary and Thesaurus, and includes all our additional content offerings from third-party sources, games + all the Dictionary.com editorial content you know and love.

iOS apps:

  • Our Free iOS app: Dictionary.com: English Words
    • This app is free to download from the App Store.
  • Our Pro iOS app: Dictionary.com Pro English
    • This is a paid app in the App Store.
    • It is ad-free, includes both our in-house Dictionary and Thesaurus, and includes all our additional content offerings from third-party sources, games + all the Dictionary.com editorial content you know and love.

When in doubt about which specific app or in-app purchase/upgrade you previously purchased, simply confirm in your App Store or Play Store account's transaction history.

If you purchased our Premium/Pro App:

If you are using the core app features (home-screen, dictionary or thesaurus look ups etc.) and are still seeing advertisements (with the exception of ads you can choose to watch for rewards in our games, and ads before certain third-party games) while using one of our apps, then you are definitely using the free version and not the premium version of the app.

Please be sure you are using the right app that corresponds to your purchase. If you find that you are currently using the free version but have paid for the separate Premium/Pro app, then simply return to the Play Store or App Store and download the premium version from the same store account you used to make the original purchase.

  • Note: purchases are solely tied to your Play or App Store account under-which you made the purchase. If you no longer have access to the purchasing Store account, you won't be able to access the purchase. In that case, you will need to make a new purchase under your current Store account.

If you purchased an Upgrade/In-App Purchase in our Free App:

If you are using the free version, have paid for an ad-free upgrade, and are still seeing ads, then you may need to reinstall your purchase. Select the main menu on the top left-hand corner, and select “Upgrade.” Here you will see a variety of available upgrade “Bundles”, or an a la carte listing under “Content Upgrades.” At the bottom of “Upgrades,” you will find the “Restore Purchase” option that will allow you to reinstall your in-app purchases from the App or Play Store you are currently logged into on your device.

Learn more about restoring your purchases for iOS or Android.

Notes:

  • Purchases do not work across or between our apps. They apply ONLY to the specific app you purchased.
  • Purchases take place in, and are solely tied to, your App or Play Store account. They are not linked to a Dictionary.com user account.
  • If you switch stores (move from one operating system to the other) you won't be able to use the same items you purchased as they don't transfer between systems. You'd need to make a new purchase in your new Store for your new device.
  • If you otherwise no longer have access to the purchasing Store account, you won't have access to your purchases. In this case, you'd need to make a new purchase in your new Store account to use items that are for sale.
